Synthesis of vitamin C

This forum will focus on the interesting topic of titrating oral vitamin C intake to so-called bowel tolerance, the point just prior to the onset of diarrhea

Synthesis of vitamin C

Post Number:#1  Post by Frank » Mon Jun 05, 2006 8:00 pm

Hi all,
I read that a genetic mutation occured in an ancestor of the primates about 25-40 million years ago. Due to this mutation synthesis of ascorbate was lost in humans and some other species.

I also read that humans can produce 3 out of the 4 amino acids required to synthesise ascorbate. Not being able to produce the 4th amino acid is due to the mutation.

Does anyone know if there have been any experiments done in supplementing that 4th amino acid to humans?

If the human body would synthesise ascorbate when supplemented with the 4th amino acid, then that would be a much simpler method of gaining the required amount of vitamin C then supplementing vitamin C to bowel tolerance.

Any thoughts on this?

Enzymes, not amino acids. Please read some basic biochemistry texts,
like:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protein

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enzyme

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amino_acid

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peptide

Orally ingested proteins will be degraded to building blocks, most likely.
This supplementation method will not work for gulonolactone oxidase.
And you don't want a needle in your liver or any other device attached
to your body to deliver the missing enzyme. Just take ascorbic acid, it is
cheap and safe.

Vitamin C side effect

Post Number:#3  Post by Frank » Tue Jun 06, 2006 6:45 pm

zucic,
Thank you for the correction.
I am not in the chemistry field and find it difficult to follow and understand all the terms. I read your references though.

From your post, I take it that it is not possible to supplement gulonolactone oxidase.
In that case, I agree, I don't want any injections or devices attached.

I am now happy with taking vitamin C.
Thank you for setting me straight.

Be sure to read this classic article:
http://www.orthomed.com/titrate.htm
When playing with titration, be sure that you are close to the
toilet! And don't be affraid, this is great experience!
