Isnt Lysine an amino acid not a protein? Thanks for the reply, I want to add it to the sodium ascorbate, but all this stuff is scary when you want to take it, then all you see for side effects is that "kidney renal failure is a side effect, liver problems.. etc"..
Proteins are composed of amino acids. Your body breaks down the proteins you eat into amino acids during digestion. Your body then builds human proteins (e.g. collagen) inside our cells from the amino acids. If you simply eat amino acids, you avoid the digestive process (and any issues there.)
As far as being scary, I hope you are kidding. There are no lethal dosages for vitamin C, and I'm not sure about lysine, but you probably cannot kill a lab animal with high amounts of either nutrient. Vitamin C is safer than water at high dosages.
On the other side of the coin, heart disease, cardiovascular disease, is the leading cause of death in the United States. That seems pretty scary to me, unless you don't mind having your chest cut open and replacing your heart arteries with veins from your legs.
In my experience, most renal/kidney problems are due to medications - toximolecular substances that the kidneys are not familiar with and cause damage. The drug companies would love to blame this toxicity on orthomolecular substances, such as vitamin C and lysine, but our experience doesn't support this idea. If you are taking medications, even OTC NSAIDS, you risk damaging your kidneys (and livers).
