rise in lp-PLA2

My wife has been do the lp protocol for about 3.5-4 months. Her lp-PLA2 has gone up from 151 to 199. Any ideas as to why this would be? Her overall cholesterol has gone down as well as her triglycerides. Her HDL, though, went from 85 to 58.
(Don't know if this is related but, her B12 is high).

My wife did have a sinus infection and was on antibiotic. She finished the antibiotic a week prior to taking the blood test with the elevated lp-PLA2. Don't know if this could be a factor.

With lp protocol you mean Paulings Therapy against high Lp(a)?
Note, that Lp-PLA2 is actually a different risk marker than Lp(a).

Its been noted that a rise in overall cholesterol can occur for a few months once PT has been started. The theory, as I understand it, is as the underlying arterial damage heals the built up cholesterol falls free and enters the blood stream which takes some time for the body to metabolize.

What went up for the OP is lp-PLA2 not lp(a). They are different things. lp-PLA2 is actually a a marker of inflammation and is actually an enzyme produced by inflammatory cells whereas lp(a) is an actual subclass of lipids.

I wonder if the High B12 is somehow related as it often signifies a deeper more serious concern.

I would suspect that if the underlying arterial damage is healed that inflammatory markers would decline.

High B12 levels can often be associated with kidney and liver issues so perhaps your inflammation is originating there and not arterial inflammation?

Did you by chance start taking any niacin, specifically slow release?

Sorry. I should have qualified. The last question about reducing lp-PLA2 was for me not my wife. It was a general question not related to B12.

We solved the B12 issuse separately. She was taking a daily supplement and didnt realize that one of the ingredients was a large dose of B12.

Large dose of the PROPER form of B12 shouldnt cause an issue or high b12 levels.

What form of B12 was she taking and how much?

it was part of a tablet and was 1000mcg.

Most combination products with that level of B12 use cyanocobalamin which is bad news.

I take 10mg (10,000mcg) dibencozide and 10mg methylcobalamin a day and have for years now with no issues.

Taken orally a miniscule fraction of the B12 actually makes it into your system.

cyanocobalamin is synthetic garbage where the cobalamin is bound to poison.
