How can swine and other types of animals that produce their own vitamin C catch the flu in the first place?

I don't have it (thank God), but I feel comfortable in knowing that if by some bad turn of luck, I somehow got infected, I could turn to the trusty Vitamin C (as well as A, D, Selenium, etc.).
