When i first started taking vit c i noticed i didnt need my allegra presciption anymore. I was very happy to NOT need a drug everyday. This peeked my interest in this unique vitamin. Why did this help my allergies? So I began to research vit c everywhere i could.
I am fascinated with all the many benefits of this wonderful vitamin but i had never heard of the notion of taking it "to bowel tolerance". The first time I tried this i had a very bad chest cold and figured why not see if it would really work..it took 70,000mg before i had enough, followed by smaller doses over the next week..and i felt great.I am sure I could not need such a large amount everyday. Why did it take so much? could it be the fact that i am nursing 2 children?
This week i have had the flu and it only took 8000mg every 20 minutes up to about 50,000 this time to get to my maximum of vit c. So my quesyion then is this..With seasonal allergies and all the nursing how much do i need to take everday when i am not sick? Must I take up to bowel tolerance everyday? Also factor in that i am trying to get over a staph infection from a recent surgery and am on antibiotics for that. I very much need some clarity on this issue.
This is an interesting anecdote (not needing the allegra prescription) and we are glad that you have discovered Vitamin C. Your health will benefit greatly. As well as your children, (I'm also GLAD you are not on a prescription meds while lactating.)
But the question of "How Much and When" is the purpose of our Bowel Tolerance forum, where I will be moving this post. Your question is not an easy question to answer. There is no cookbook, since we are all biologically different, but Dr. Cathcart's
Titrating to Bowel Tolerance paper is where you should start to learn the method.

From the numbers you have provided, we know that your current vitamin C requirements are high, perhaps higher than most people. As your body regains its health, the amount of vitamin C required diminishes - all this is described by Cathcart.
The other prime factors in improving health, and thus reducing ascorbate requirements, are to eliminate processed foods containing trans fats (hydrogenated oils) and eliminate refined grains and refined sugars, and to follow Linus Pauling's regimen on or about page 14 of
HOW TO LIVE LONGER AND FEEL BETTER (1986,2006)
In my experience, everything else is secondary, barring some genetic defect, although we are now learning that vitamin D, especially D3, which is produced by cholesterol in the skin by sunlight in summer, is very important in warding off the flu and other winter-time infections.
